Assess an accounts team on four things: accuracy (errors found in a sample of work), speed (time to complete standard tasks), compliance (returns filed correctly and on time) and process (checklists, ownership and reconciliations). Test before training, test again after, and compare scores per person.
The four dimensions
| Dimension | What to measure | Example measure |
|---|---|---|
| Accuracy | Errors in a sample of entries and reconciliations | Errors per 50 entries |
| Speed | Time to finish standard tasks | Minutes for a bank reconciliation |
| Compliance | Returns correct and on time | Late filings or notices in the last 12 months |
| Process | Checklists, owners, reviews | Is month-end close documented and followed? |
How to run the test
- ✓Pick 3 or 4 standard tasks that reflect real work.
- ✓Use the same sample data for everyone so scores are comparable.
- ✓Score accuracy first, then speed. Fast but wrong is not a pass.
- ✓Share results with each person and agree one or two improvement goals.
- ✓Repeat after training or after 30 to 90 days.
Reading the results
- ✓A wide gap between people suggests missing standards, not only skill gaps.
- ✓Repeated errors in one area point to a training or checklist need.
- ✓Slow but accurate staff may need shortcuts and practice, not more theory.
Keep it fair and useful
Use the assessment to support people, not to blame them. Teams that see the scoring as a way to improve engage more and learn faster.
